CUBS NARROW BOATING CAMP 2016

On the weekend of Friday 30th Sept through to Sunday 2nd October saw 35 Cubs in total on the waters of the Grand Union canal.
The Cubs were split up into 2 groups, the first group getting to the Narrow boats moored at Hillingdons Narrow boat Associations HQ on the Friday evening, sleeping over on the boat ready for a days boating on the Saturday up the canal, returning around 4pm. The second group doing the same on the Saturday evening for their boating experience on the Sunday.
All Cubs had a go at sleeping! (not all were that good at this I have to say), steering (under the watchful eyes of our skippers Steve and David), feeding the ducks and swans on-route, and operating the many locks we had to go through.

I am pleased to say that NO Cubs got wet from the canal over the whole weekend (though we did have a small amount of rain on the Saturday trip) the Sunday group had glorious sunshine all day.
Going on how vocal all the Cubs were over the whole weekend they all had a fantastic time, and thanks must go out to all the Cub leaders, Lesley, David and Steve for lasting the whole weekend.

Wild West CubJam 100 – 28th May – 3rd June 2016

Howdy All…. Yee Haa..

Where do we start……..

Firstly, to say that finally all of the arrangements had come together as 24 Cubs and 6 leaders gathered for the journey to CubJam100. This journey had started many months before when Baloo had signed 2nd Bracknell Cubs up for 24 places at this great event.

After an uneventful journey to Gilwell we started to construct our camp (We won’t mention the minibus incident….). Tents were erected, Marquees were constructed and tea was brewed. We were in Tombstone…..

The week started with a gathering of the masses for the opening ceremony and general sing along and dancing, with a wild west theme.

Yes, I can confirm that 2nd Bracknell Leaders do now have a reputation for dancing and singing. We were even accused of having practised the routines beforehand ………

During the week there were many arranged activities and also a number of free format activity. We had some Cubs take part in the CubJam’s Got Talent competition. And they did well but unfortunately did not make it to the live finals…….

There was swimming, zorbing, archery, climbing wall, assault courses, trampolines. Other aactivities on site including Wild West Games, Magic Shows, Music Workshops, Wild West Carnival Crafts, Treasure Hunts, Gilwell Park Site Activities.

Day trip to London visiting the Planetarium and Cutty Sark. After a ride on the Thames clipper bus to Greenwich we had a mad dash up the hill to see the planetarium show. This was followed by lunch in one of the rooms in the planetarium provided by the planetarium for our group. Then in the rain back to the Cutty Sark for a quick look around the famous Tea Clipper then back to the bus for the journey back to Gilwell.

The children all got to take part in all of the activities but swimming seemed to be the favorite.

We joined in with other groups even inviting one small cub group back to our camp for a BBQ one evening.

The children all completed the Personal challenge of trying all of the food served on camp even if they did not like it.

It was a long week but all had a great time. There were some very tied people and even some of the cubs were tired by the end of the week.

As a leader I can say I was very proud of how our 24 cubs all took part and were great ambassadors for 2nd Bracknell.

Celebration Day

WP_20160717_0212nd Bracknell and The Parks Scout Groups enjoyed a sunny afternoon at The Parks Community Hall and park last Sunday 17th July in celebrating the past year of scouting with over 200 members, their families and dogs.

It was themed “give it a go” and everyone enjoyed the activities rope making, wide games, pioneering, garden games, dog agility and a bouncy castle, finishing with a BBQ and smores yum! and if they were still hungry the Explorer Scouts ran a tuck shop to raise funds for their next camp.

One parent wrote “I just wanted to thank everyone involved for a fantastic day. It was the first time my son and I had been to something like this and he loved it.”

Beaver Sleepover

Photo 04-06-2016, 09 30 34 20160604_14163830 Beavers enjoyed a sleepover at Earleywood Camp site last Friday 3rd June and took part in a variety activities including lighting fires, tent & shelter building, pioneering, rope making, climbing wall and they made their own sandwich lunch.

21 Beavers achieved their 1st night’s away experience and they all earned their Camp Craft activity badge too.

One parent wrote “We would like to thank you and all the other leaders wholeheartedly for organising the Beavers sleepover camp. He was very apprehensive, it being his first ever camp, but he gave it 10/10, said he “loved everything” and wants to “do it again immediately”! I’d say that was a success!”

Cubs visit Sky Academy – by Rama

It was the first day of half term and the second day of the clocks going back, so you would think 7.30am would see me snuggled in bed, maybe a cup of tea and a good book?

Being a Cub Leader at 2nd Bracknell meant I was at the train station with my clip board waiting for 32 Cubs and 6 Leaders. We had arranged to visit Sky Academy where we were going to go behind the scenes at Sky and make our own TV news report.

So why would we take Cubs to Sky?  Sky Academy asks the Cubs to: be creative;  communicate effectively; solve problems; manage time carefully and practice teamwork. The skills we try and encourage in the week to week meetings.

The Cubs were really well behaved on the busy commuter train, during a quick change at Virginia Water and on to Syon Lane. We arrived and were led into the Sky studios, four floors, 100m by 45m each floor the size of a football pitch.

We saw life size models of the Simpsons, Sulley and Mike,  studios with very expensive cameras and we met people who worked on the ‘sharing’ floor, this is where the Sky programmes get sent to the satellites and people’s homes.   We saw Sky News being presented live on air. We then went to the ‘making’ floor and the Cubs put into practice what they had learnt in their own studios.

With a theme of ‘Taking care of our world’, Reporters reported, Editors edited, Producers produced, Script writers wrote, Witnesses and Experts were interviewed, Directors pulled it all together and the camera operators caught it all on camera.  Each Cub should have a USB wristband with their News report on it.  If not please e mail rama@2ndbracknell.org.uk

The Cubs were perfectly behaved and you never know may have been inspired to pursue a career in television.
