We decided to remember our founder – Robert Baden-Powell who had his birthday close to this weekend. In practice this meant that we did the usual range of traditional activities including tracking, orienteering and archery. We also included time on the infamous Walton Firs adventure course.

The popular District 6-a-side football competition took place on Sunday 9 July 2006 at Binfield Football Club. We entered 2 teams from Cubs and also a team of Beavers.
Here are the match reports
Beavers – report by Merlin
Although we didn’t win this year, 2nd Bracknell Beavers played really well, only losing one of their four games. The team was made up of Amy, Matthew and Michael from Lumberjacks and Daniel, Lewis, James, and Cameron from Mounties. They worked really hard in every game they played – you would all have been very proud of them.
We also lent three players to 6th Bracknell as they had been let down, (special thanks to Thomas Holloway, Adam Cowley and Benjamin Morgan for stepping into the breach). Despite playing for a different team, they also worked extremely hard in every match they played. As a result of this and the fact that we got a team together at the last moment – 2nd Bracknell were awarded the Most Sporting Team …. so congratulations are due all round.

A parent commented: “The Cubs Stags footie team should be right proud of themselves, not only for the performance, they all played superbly, but their sportsmanship was terrific too. A pleasure to watch. Although they only just missed finals qualification, they played some blinding football, with their first game a 11-0 win!”

Congratulations to Aidan McCormack from Stags who won the County Chess Competition.
This report from the Bracknell News, Thursday 9 March (corrected)
A nine year old mastermind has been named chess champion for Berkshire Cub Scouts after a clean sweep of wins.
Aidan McCormack, from 2nd Bracknell cub pack, won the trophy after winning five out of five games in the County final. Up against 12 other packs from Berkshire, Aiden proved he was top strategist in the game. He had already won the South East Berks District competition (held last October) and had to give up a weekend at Cub Camp to compete in the County competition.
His mother, Sue, said “We were a little surprised that he won it but not too surprised. We have always encouraged him to play chess.” Aiden started playing chess two years ago after his father taught him the game. “He has really got into it in the last six months and become really good at it,” said Mrs McCormack.
Aidan, who attends Warfield Primary School has been a cub for two years and is seconder of Brown six. He is already plotting his next move on the board – defending his title in the competition next year.
The District Swimming Gala took place on Sunday 27 November. Once again the District is grateful to the Licensed Victuallers School on London Road for allowing us to use their pool for the afternoon.
As usual the event was split into 2 age groups with the under 9½ races taking place first. Normally, any one competitor is limited to a maximum of two pointed events plus the relay. However, the District have again relaxed the rule this year as otherwise there wouldn’t be enough teams to make it a good competition. Well done to all those who swam. Our overall points score did not reflect the amount of effort that was put in by all our swimmers. Cubs who came first or second in their heats went through to the finals. Where a position is shown it is the position in the final.
In addition there are two MEDLEY events which are not pointed for the Palmer Shield but are for individual winners medals for the fastest times.
If you were in our teams have you got your Swimmers badge yet? It is a five stage badge but unfortunately just taking part in the gala does not complete it – although it does count as an “organised event” for part 7. If you have swimming lessons just print off a copy of the requirements and get your swimming teacher to sign to say you can do it. You can see how we got on in previous years by visiting our Past Events page. Palmer Shield
