Presentation of The Award of Merit to Nick Layt

On Saturday 15 June, Steve Prower and a party of Cubs took Barry’s Bus over to Nowhurst Camp Site near Horsham to make a surprise visit to 1st Billingshurst’s camp. The groups have a link because Nick Layt who is now assistant Cub Leader of Billingshurst’s Parbrook pack was previously the Cub leader at 2nd Bracknell.

However, this visit was not just a social one as we had nominated Nick for a special award.

Steve Prower, Group Scout Leader at 2nd Bracknell said “Nick has been a 2nd Bracknell leader on and off since 1985 and despite moving to Sussex in 2006 has continued the relationship with us, not least by continuing to manage our website. We thought that was worth celebrating and so I’m delighted to be able to present him with the Award of Merit”.

Karen Brooks, Cub Leader of 1st Billingshurst’s Parbrook Cubs said “Like many other camps, Nick has planned this one for us. It has been very hard to weave in the 2nd Bracknell involvement without him finding out but he really had no idea this was coming. I’ve run Cubs with him since 2006 and this award is well deserved. We’ve certainly benefited from the ideas he brought with him and it is great to do joint activities with the Bracknell Cubs and leaders.”

Nick Layt said “It has been quite a day. People kept turning up and I had no idea why but it is lovely to receive the award. When I first joined 2nd Bracknell in 1985, the inspirational Barry Smith was Akela. He was an amazing man and his legacy is all of us that are still involved in Scouting. I can’t think of anybody else at 2nd Bracknell who has received this award since I have been involved so that makes me feel really special.”

Following the award presentation the Cubs and supporters from both groups were able to enjoy a celebration lunch including a specially decorated cake made by Sue Laws, a Parbrook cub parent. The two packs then spent the rest of the day together at camp until the Bracknell party departed after a camp fire.

Factfile:

  • Nick was Assistant Cub Leader at 2nd Bracknell from 1985 to 1993 and then Cub Leader from 1998 to 2006 when he moved to Sussex. He joined 1st Billingshurst’s Parbrook pack in November 2006 before becoming its leader in 2008. In 2012 he stepped back to become Assistant Cub Leader again. He also ran Cubs at Stubbington House school (in Ascot) in the early 1990s and 1st Wood End Cub pack in North Warwickshire from 1994 to 1997.
  • Nick has managed www.2ndbracknell.co.uk since it was launched in 2002 and introduced www.parbrook.org.uk when he moved to Sussex in 2006. He has also introduced both groups to online fundraising (originally buy.at and now Easyfundraising) and Twitter and manages @2ndBracknell@ParbrookCubs and@1Billingshurst.
  • Nick was 2nd Bracknell’s last Akela. When Peter Freeman stepped into Nick’s shoes in September 2006 he made the decision that he’d prefer to stick to his existing Jungle Book name, Baloo.
  • It isn’t unusual for the two groups to work together – our very own Marian normally runs the kitchen at Parbrook camps and they are often visited by Baloo. The packs camped together at Stedham in 2011 and 2012.
  • The Award of Merit can be awarded after a period of not less than 10-12 years of outstanding service while holding an adult appointment. It implies keen, conscientious, imaginative and dedicated service over a sustained period. Awards are not made automatically and have to be justified in each case.

Gold Rush weekend at Nowhurst

We heard that there was gold in them there hills and we joined the gold rush to find it. Our summer term camp took us just up the road to Nowhurst. Our gold rush theme was rather overtaken by events when 2nd Bracknell called in to present Jacala with a special award. However, we still had plenty of time for fire lighting, wide games in the woods and of course our camp fire.

Those that followed us (@ParbrookCubs) on Twitter or checked www.twitter.com/parbrookcubs for our Twitter feed got extra information from camp as it happened:

  • All quiet at Nowhurst. That will change at 7pm when the gold rush starts pic.twitter.com/PfAEW6XKpL
  • Dark on the field now but still rather too much noise from the Cub tents. Lights out pic.twitter.com/WLh1XxmPdc
  • The thought of gold was too much for the residents of Rattlesnake Gulch who unwisely decided that 4.30am was a good time to disturb us
  • Sunshine and showers for breakfast – along with sausages, hoops and waffles of course pic.twitter.com/QmGtxStT01
  • Pleased to welcome our friends from @2ndBracknell. Keego helping them with camp gadgets pic.twitter.com/j0yVdlAlGf
  • We’re delighted that Jacala received the Award of Merit in a surprise presentation by @2ndBracknell leaders pic.twitter.com/W9H0Mu58yq
  • Time for a bit of free time on the field while Keego sorts us out a fire to cook our dinner. A few tired faces about and Cubs too

  • Thank you Nowhurst for a great weekend. Parbrook Cubs have left the site. Thanks also to our lovely parents for transporting gear

A Knight’s Quest

This is one of our favourite sites and is near Midhurst in the South Downs. West Sussex County Council have put the site up for sale meaning that we cannot guarantee that it will remain open in 2013 and so this may have been our last chance to camp there. This was a level 3 camp as we slept in tents.

We were once again joined by our friends from 2nd Bracknell. Our Knights based programme took us through the weekend and we managed to fit in all the usual things such as craft, games, rifle shooting, cooking and the camp fire. We were also lucky to be able to see the local badgers.

More photos from the camp are in our Stedham gallery

Those that followed us (@ParbrookCubs) on Twitter or checked the home page of the website for our Twitter feed got extra information (including pictures) from camp as it happened:

  • Bit wet on the field but Cubs all very excited in the mess tent. Off to the woods with torches for a wide game next pic.twitter.com/AQnwnXjk 21 Sep
  • For once the early noise at camp was country cockerels rather than chatty Cubs. Sun just risen & already warming us up pic.twitter.com/5eWJyOlA 22 Sep
