District Football Competition 2005

The popular District 6-a-side football competition took place on Sunday 10 July 2005 at Binfield Football Club. The Cubs entered a Stags and a Wolves team and Beavers entered one.

Beavers Team
The Beavers who took part were: Christopher Freeman, Alistair Shields, Alex Evans, Joshua Rose, Ben Morgan, Mitchell Garrington and Nicholas.

The Beavers won all four of their matches and therefore won their competition.

Wolves Team
Fraser Wood, Ben Wortley, Matthew Workman, Jack Jarvis, Sammy Lee, Jonathan Rose Rupert Viney and Alex Kent

An excited Shere Khan has filed this report:
Our first match was against 6th Bracknell and we dominated the whole game .We won this game 2-0 and Jonathan and Ben scored the goals We then went on to play Sunningdale Lions and the team had lots of confidence after their first victory. The defence played a fabulous game although the ball hardly went their end as the final score was 8-0 to us. Alex scored 4 some of which were set up by Matthew, Jonathan scored 3 and Fraser scored 1. They then broke for lunch and I was worried that they would lose their momentum but they came back after lunch to beat 7th Bracknell 4-0. The goals were scored by Sammy and Ben scored 3. Ben’s goals were set up by Alex and Matthew . As you can imagine by this point I had started to get a little excited that we had something special in our boys on the pitch. Our last League match was against 4th Bracknell and we started off well and really played well but at the end they got a little complacent and let the other team get a goal but the final score was 3-1 to us. Ben scored 2 goals and Rupert 1. This meant that we had won all our league games and had gained a maximum score of 12 points so we qualified as winners for the semi finals. The draw went our way as it meant that we played South Ascot in the semi finals and if by some miracle we got through then we would play the winner of Binfield v 6th Bracknell. I explained to them that Binfield were a tough team but we had an excellent chance if we could get to the finals. We started our game against South Ascot and Jonathan set up a goal for Ben . We then had a fabulous goal from nowhere from Matthew. Our hearts were literally in our mouths as we just couldn’t watch. After half time it seemed that we had relaxed a little bit and this gave South Ascot a chance to score. It got very tense with parents and myself screaming at the boys to hang on to their lead and defend our goal. It paid of and we won 2-1. Much to the boys shock and surprise we were through to the final against Binfield who beat 6th Bracknell. They started the game playing excellently and Sammy scored within minutes of starting the game. I don’t think Binfield at this point knew what had hit them. At half time our boys were really tired and it started to show when they went back on the pitch and in quick succession Binfield managed to score 3 goals. What a shame!!! The final score was 3-1 to Binfield so for the 4th year running Binfield won the football.

Stags team

William Hawkes, Michael Matthews, Elliott Garrington, Cameron Shields, Sam Holloway, James Morgan, Chris Earle and Eamon Rafferty.

Stags results:

Stags 2 – 0 1st Ascot. Scorers: Sam and William
Stags 1 – 3 Binfield. Scorer: Cameron
Stags 0 – 3 Sunningdale Tigers
Stags 2 – 0 South Ascot. Scorers: Sam and Michael

Stags Man of the Tournament would be Eamon in goal.

Shere Khan says…
I think that you will agree with me that our boys played fantastically and Mrs Jarvis did a great job of being our team manager. Michael Matthews Dad was also a star as he looked after the Stags team. It was a good day for Kingfisher and the Beavers as they won all their games so they won the Beaver League. They were definitely a talented bunch and I will be looking out for them to play for the cubs in the future.

District Swimming Gala 2004

The District Swimming Gala took place on Saturday 30 October. Once again the District is grateful to the Licensed Victuallers School on London Road for allowing us to use their pool for the afternoon. We are very pleased to announce that our Seals team came first and won the Palmer Shield. We also won the two individual Medley events.

As usual the event was split into 2 age groups with the under 9½ races taking place first. Normally, any one competitor is limited to a maximum of two pointed events plus the relay. However, the District have relaxed the rule this year as otherwise there wouldn’t be enough teams to make it a good competition.

Although we were hit by some last minute cancellations, we managed to enter 3 teams this year. There is a special mention here for Matthew Chaumbult in our Seals team. Although he’s in the under 9½ age group he stepped in to fill a gap in the open category. Well done Matthew.

You can see how we got on in previous years by visiting our Past Events page – click on the link on the left of this page.

Cub Overnight Camp – March 2004

On 20 and 21 March 2004 24 Cubs spent the weekend at the hall. The weekend was designed for first time campers to see how they got on and also to act as a warm up for Summer Camp. In the end we had 14 Cubs doing their first Night Away badge with the rest being more experienced campers. As well as doing our Nights Away we decided to complete the Art badge too. With it being Mothering Sunday weekend we had the ideal excuse to make some presents.

We started the camp with the first part of the art badge. This involved making a clay potmaking a clay pot.

The Cubs seemed to enjoy rolling the clay into sausages and then using them to make their pots. Meanwhile Akela was lurking in the kitchen. They were supposed to be painted but unfortunately didn’t dry out in time. Everybody did well with their pots but we liked Jack’s one best.

On Saturday we had planned to spend most of the afternoon outside. However, the weather had other ideas and gave us a mixture of sunshine and showers. We went outside anyway and divided into two teams for a game of Pioneers and Indians. This was followed by a go at laying some tracking signs. We split into 2 groups and each laid some tracking signs for the other group to follow. By the time we got back from that a heavy shower had arrived and we decided to head back to the hall, thus abandoning the return match of Pioneers and Indians. However, Baloo did take a moment to take a picture of the two, rather bedraggled teams! Group 1 had been with Baloo and Mang while Group 2 went round with Akela and Shere Khan.

Once we’d had a drink and dried off it was back to the art badge by making cards for Mothering Sunday. Harry and Edward were working on their cards when they were snapped by Baloo.

After all that activity there was time for a bit of free time before dinner. Oliver was once again running the card school.

We’d asked Chil to provide the catering for camp following the great success of her food at Summer Camp 2003. When she agreed we only had about 15 names on the list. Now that there were 24 it meant that making shepherds pie was a bigger task than she had expected. However, the Cubs were very grateful and were soon lining up for their food.

We ended the day with a few songs around our indoor camp fire. Then it was time for a jungle book story and bed. On this sort of camp you don’t expect to get much sleep. Some Cubs are much better at sleeping than others but the ones that go to sleep first normally wake up early. This leaves the ones who were talking until the small hours fast asleep in the morning. Can you work out who this sleepy boy is? You can draw your own conclusions why he is still asleep when the others have woken up.

Before breakfast there was just time to do some posters to advertise Summer Camp which completed the art badge. Then Chil was back again having woken up early and cooked the sausages at home. After breakfast we had very little time before the parents arrived for Church Parade which was earlier than normal due to it being Mothering Sunday.

District Quiz 2004

The District Quiz took place on Saturday 6 March at Earleywood camp site in South Ascot.

To enter the quiz you need to have a team of 3 comprising one 8 year old, a 9 year old and a 10 year old. This year we were only allowed to enter one team per pack.

* Stuart is actually 9 but answered the harder age 10 questions. Similarly, Harry is 8 but answered the age 9 questions.

The quiz was in two parts. The questions rounds included sections on Scouting, mental arithmetic, English language, English literature and geography. Then there were the practical rounds which included identifying road signs, dingbats, driving radio controlled cars around a course, nature pictures and a game of “Go Bananas”. Once all the teams had completed all the rounds the scores were added together.
